Are We Missing A Trick With Our Dog Toys?

Choosing appropriate toys for our dogs breed is essential, as we need to consider what our dog was bred for and their personal preferences. This will help to make sure that we are fulfilling our dogs natural instinctive needs.

Lets have a look at some breeds:

Retrievers and Sporting Breeds:

These breeds enjoy chasing and retrieving objects. Dog dumbbells, ropes and balls are good for this.

Top tip: Don't leave the toys lying around as the fun part of the game is the actual retrieving part.

Gun dogs tend to be very mouth orientated and will enjoy a good chew toy. If we don't give them something appropriate to chew they will find something themselves like your furniture or socks!

Terriers:

Terriers have a strong need to engage in hunting activities. Designated digging pits in your garden will prevent the rest of your flowers bed from being dug up. You can hide or bury treats and toys in your digging pit for your dog to find. Toys that they can grab, bite and squeak are a big hit with terriers.

Herding Breeds:

Herding dogs will enjoy toys that allow them to mimic herding activities. Using flirt poles, puzzle toys and games of fetch are great for this.

Choosing toys for your dogs breed can really enhance their playtime experience and will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Remember to always supervise your dog during playtime and make sure your toys are durable.
